National Indigenous Peoples Day & National Indigenous History Month

On Sunday, June 21 we commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day.

This is a day for all of us to honour and celebrate the cultures, histories and knowledge systems of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples in this province and across Turtle Island. It’s also a time to sit with the ongoing realities of colonialism and the harms that persist on these lands to this day.

June is also National Indigenous History Month in Canada, which is a time for us to honour the stories, achievements, contributions and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis People across Turtle Island. It’s a time for us to reflect on the history of Indigenous Peoples and their dedicated and continued stewardship of these lands for over 9000 years.

At CPBC, we acknowledge our responsibilities to uphold the inherent and enduring rights of Indigenous Peoples and remain committed to dismantling Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination within our health system.

As regulators of one of the most accessible healthcare professions, we recognize our duty — and the duty of the professionals we regulate — to acknowledge the ongoing impacts of Indigenous-specific racism and to embed Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-Racism within the environments we are responsible for.

As part of our commitment, we now require all pharmacy professionals in BC to complete annual learning related to Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-racism. You can learn more about this requirement here and access a list of learning resources and activities to help guide you as you begin your learning journey.

We encourage you all to take the time to learn about the histories of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and to take the time to better understand the First Nations on whose traditional territories you reside.
