A Message from the Registrar: Lapu-Lapu Day Tragedy
Like so many of you, I am completely heartbroken by the senseless tragedy that unfolded at the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival this past weekend.
What should have been a joyful celebration of Filipino culture and heritage, became a moment of profound loss. So many lives were lost, including a young child, and dozens were injured.
Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and their loved ones. There is nothing I can say that will ease this pain, but please know that we are mourning with you and holding space for all those who were lost to this horrific act of violence.
I know how close to home this is for all of us across British Columbia. This isn't just another headline or news story. It's a devastating tragedy that is affecting people we know and care about in our communities, our workplaces, and our neighbourhoods.
I know that we all feel a deep sense of loss—not just for those directly affected, but for our entire province. For the safety and peace, we've often taken for granted. Things will feel different for a while, and it's going to take time for all of us to process what has happened.
As a mother, daughter, sister, and auntie, I can't help but think of the families whose lives have been forever changed by this tragedy. My thoughts are with the parents who are facing unimaginable grief as well as the siblings, friends and countless others whose lives have been profoundly impacted.
As healthcare professionals, we need to recognize the first responders, healthcare workers and community members who rushed to help at the scene, and who continue to care for those who were injured or need support. We are deeply grateful for your unwavering compassion and commitment.
While I cannot begin to understand the depth of pain you are experiencing, I want the Filipino community and all those who were affected by Saturday’s tragedy to know that CPBC mourns with you during this incredibly difficult time.
The celebration of Lapu-Lapu Day honours the legacy of Lapu-Lapu, an Indigenous leader of the Philippines known for his strength, courage, and resilience. And while these are the same qualities that I know will help the Filipino community through this incredibly painful time, please know that you don't have to face this alone. We stand with you in solidarity and support and are ready to help in any way we can.
I join all British Columbians in offering my deepest condolences to everyone touched by this tragedy. In moments of darkness like this, I’m reminded that healing happens not in isolation, but in connection. I humbly ask all of you to remember that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is to simply be present for one another. To listen to, support and create space for each other’s pain.
In the days ahead, I hope that we can all lean on one another and find strength in our communities as we honour the lives that were lost.
With profound sadness,
Suzanne Solven
