College Enhances UBC Bursaries

The College is proud to recognize the dedicated efforts of pharmacy students pursuing their education. Since the 1970’s, the College has awarded bursaries to 114 students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia.

The cost of tuition should not pose as a barrier to students reaching their goals, which is why the Board approved a motion to increase bursary amounts from $750 to $1000 at its February 21, 2014 meeting.

This change will become effective in September 2015.

The call for nominations is out! Nominate a colleague or fellow healthcare professional for the UBC Awards for Interprofessional Collaboration.

Medication Reconciliation Reminder

Community pharmacists can help ease a patient’s transition between facilities, physicians and/or service providers by guiding them and their caregivers through their medication reconciliation.

While hospitals in BC have been implementing medication reconciliation during patient admission for the past few years, it is also common to reconcile medication during a patient’s transfer to another facility or discharge.

ADAPT Program

The College would like to congratulate those pharmacists who have successfully completed the ADAPT program and have received their Certificate in Patient Care Skills.

With 88 ADAPT graduates and more on the way since the College announced support, the College is thrilled with the response and extremely proud of the work put in by these pharmacists in achieving their certificate. The College will continue to support and encourage strategies that enhance quality and lead to better health outcomes for our patients.

Pain BC Offers CE Program for Community Pharmacists

Chronic pain can often be a life-long battle. Pharmacists play a key role in chronic pain management, and Pain BC now offers a continuing education program for community pharmacists to better evaluate and manage long-term pain.

Indigenous Cultural Competency Training Promotes Better Patient Relationships

Indigenous Cultural Competency Online Training Program (ICC) is a course that assesses Aboriginal cultural knowledge and introduces practical communications strategies. Health care professionals have a specific training session, Core ICC Health, which presents real-world scenarios and solutions for health care professionals working throughout British Columbia.

New Gateway to Canada Project for International Pharmacy Graduates

International Pharmacy Graduates (IPGs) now have a new entryway into Canadian pharmacy.

The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) launched its new website www.pharmacistsgatewaycanada.ca on June 25, 2014. The new IPG Gateway to Canada Project will assist international pharmacists in their transition to Canadian practice.

Methadone Maintenance Treatment Review

On February 1st, the College – in partnership with the College of Physicians and Surgeons, PharmaCare and other healthcare stakeholders – implemented updated pharmacy Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) standards; the methadone product has now transitioned from a 1 mg/ml to 10 mg/ml.

The month of February was a transitional month, where pharmacists could dispense methadone 1 mg/ml for prescriptions written in January 2014 or methadone 10mg/ml for prescriptions written February 2014 and beyond.

College Presents Three Year Strategic Plan

On March 26, 2014, the College released its plan to improve the quality of pharmacy services over the next three years.

Titled “Quality of Pharmacy Services to Optimize Patient Outcomes”, the detailed three-year strategic plan outlines a number of goals and objectives that cover a wide range of pharmacy practice. These objectives were created in order for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in BC to meet the rapid pace of change in the pharmacy industry as well as technological advances.

The College will soon begin to roll out initiatives in the following five areas:

College Honours Former Registrar Norman Thomas

Norm had a long and distinguished pharmacy career in BC and across Canada. He was owner/operator of Norman’s Pharmacy before becoming Registrar of the College for 17 years from 1978 until his retirement in 1995.

"Norm was a true gentleman, with a great sense of humour and a wonderful laugh," says current Registrar Bob Nakagawa. "He was a leader, mentor and friend to me and a generation of pharmacists."
