With 2020 and the launch of our next Strategic Plan approaching, the College has been hard at work drafting its strategic goals for the next five years of pharmacy practice in British Columbia.
With the holidays approaching and many pharmacies adopting shortened holiday hours, it is important for pharmacists to ensure that they are able to accommodate the dosing schedules of patients receiving Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT).
Starting January 2, 2020, prescriptions for certain codeine containing liquid preparations will require a Controlled Prescription Program duplicate prescription form. As with all Controlled Prescription Program drugs, these preparations must also be stored in a time-delay safe.
Since 2012, a total of 181,800 kits have been reported as distributed by Take Home Naloxone (THN) sites in British Columbia (BC). Of those, more than 50,000 kits have been used to reverse an overdose.
It has come to our attention that in the recent past, there have been a number of instances where relocated pharmacies have begun operating in their new location prior to completing the application process and receiving their new pharmacy licence. The College would like to remind registrants that this constitutes the operation of an unlawful pharmacy, and may result in referral to the Inquiry Committee.
Pharmacy care for residential care patients is essential to our health care system and the well-being of our aging population. As the senior population size, medical complexities and number of transitions between levels of care increase, so does the probability of medication incidents and the potential for ill effects.
As a relatively new component of the Practice Review Program, Compliance Officers would like to share some of their early findings in areas where non-compliance has been observed for residential care services.
The College Office will be closed from December 25, 2019 to January 1, 2020.
If you are planning to submit your continuing education, or complete your registration or pharmacy license renewal over the holidays, make sure you are prepared.
On December 16, 2019, new federal regulations, associated with the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act (also known as Vanessa’s Law), will come into effect requiring hospitals across the country to report serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and medical device incidents (MDIs) to Health Canada within 30 days of being documented within the hospital.
To acknowledge the important role that our practice educators play in teaching and supervising students, the Pharmacy Practice Educator of the Year Awards (2018/2019) were presented at the annual Celebrate the Pharmacy Practice Educator, Facilitator, and Community Partner Appreciation Event on October 22, 2019 at the Delta Hotels Burnaby Conference Centre in Burnaby, BC.
