Registration is now open for the BC Pharmacy Association Annual Conference 2016!

More than 300 delegates from the pharmacy sector from BC and across Canada will meet to network, learn and advance their careers in community pharmacy and the health-care sector.

This year's theme is "The DNA of Pharmacy". It represents how advances in genetic testing can shape the future of pharmacy patient care and how pharmacists ensure mastery of the core business building blocks – or DNA – of community pharmacy.

Pharmacy has changed almost completely since that time. The practice is different, the drugs are different, the public that we serve is different…the whole world has changed. Some things haven’t changed though. We are still a recognized profession that serves as the drug and drug therapy expert to society.

College Asks for Input to Inform its Strategic Plan

The College used Thoughtexchange, an online engagement tool, to capture feedback from registrants, health care stakeholders, and the public to help identify key ideas and priorities within our Strategic Plan.

There are three steps in the Thoughtexchange process:

Share - where everyone shares their thoughts
Star - where everyone’s thoughts and stars are shared
Discover- where everyone sees each other's thoughts and adds stars to them.

Guest Post: Benefits and harms of drugs for “neuropathic” pain

Drugs like gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, venlafaxine, and tricyclic antidepressants are often used to treat neuropathic pain. In fact, in the last decade, use of these drugs has steadily increased in BC residents with total spending approximately >$50 million per year.

How often do these drugs provide meaningful reductions in pain and at what doses? How soon can you tell if the drugs are helping reduce pain? How often will patients suffer harm from these drugs? Is there a practical strategy for using these drugs in patients with neuropathic pain based on the best available evidence?

Health Canada Approves Abortion-Inducing Drug

Health Canada has approved the use of the abortion-inducing drug branded as Mifegymiso® in Canada.

Mifegymiso® provides a medical abortion regimen rather than a surgical procedure to induce an abortion. The treatment consists of a combination drug product of mifepristone and misoprostol. It is to be used sequentially for the termination of a developing intra-uterine pregnancy up to a gestational age of 49 days.
