On April 14, 2016, the Board of the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia approved certain amendments to the College Bylaws for public posting.
Over the past few months the College’s role in Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) has been on the minds of many pharmacy professionals.
I attended a meeting of the Pharmacy Leaders of Tomorrow (also known as PLoT) last week. This is a grassroots group of young pharmacists in the community who get together to talk about the profession and stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship.
The amendment reflects upcoming changes to the Ministry’s Reference Drug Program (RDP).
The Practice Review Program is fully underway in community pharmacies across the province. As Compliance Officers conduct more practice reviews, they are noticing opportunities for the College to provide clarification to pharmacy professionals on selected areas of common concern.
This installment of Practice Review Program Insights focuses on inventory management of compounding materials and products.
College registrants must now include a minimum amount of accredited learning hours every year to maintain registration. The decision, which was approved at the November Board meeting, requires registrants at a minimum to submit 5 accredited hours of their 15 total learning hours.
March marks Pharmacist Awareness Month! This year the Canadian Pharmacists Association celebrates March with the theme of Doing more. For you.
The CPhA website has great resources for pharmacists and patients, including a printable visual checklist for patients and videos.
Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary stent insertion has become commonplace and is ubiquitous in the treatment of myocardial infarction. Use of dual antiplatelet therapy or “DAPT” (ASA plus clopidogrel, ASA plus prasugrel, ASA plus ticagrelor) is critical post PCI and coronary stent insertion to prevent stent thrombosis. The incidence of early stent thrombosis ranges around 1-2% while on DAPT while late stent thrombosis ranges from 0.2-0.6%.1 While the incidence may be low, acute stent thrombosis often presents as a STEMI and is associated with mortality rates of 20-45%. While several factors influences the rates of stent thrombosis, the most common cause of acute stent thrombosis is nonadherence to DAPT.2
