The UBC Pharmacists Clinic is helping chronic headache sufferers with their long wait times to see a specialist at the UBC Headache Clinic.
Before seeing a specialist, patients now go through an hour-long screening with a pharmacist at the clinic. This consultation helps to establish a common understanding of the patient’s condition and their medication history. It also helps to identify some of the root causes of a patient’s headaches.
By the time patients do arrive at the headache clinic, they can focus on the deeper issues.
The UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences has created the Initiative for Sustainable Health Care, a joint initiative between the pharmaceutical industry, government and the University.
The initiative was created to provide a neutral, balancing voice and opportunities for dialogue and research on economic principles of health care sustainability, with a focus on pharmacists and pharmaceuticals in effecting change. It also includes a professorship.
The Professorship for Sustainable Health Care was awarded to Assistant Professor Mark Harrison.
he Department of Medicine at McMaster University has joined with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC to create a pharmacist-centred module within the OSCAR Electronic Medical Record.
OSCAR – which stands for Open Source Clinical Application Resource – was created at McMaster University and distributed to community clinicians at no cost. While the software has paid dividends for physicians, it is clear that better patient health outcomes are a result of a collaborative effort across health care professionals, which is why work is underway to create a pharmacist module.
The College is proud to recognize the dedicated efforts of pharmacy students pursuing their education. Since the 1970’s, the College has awarded bursaries to 114 students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia.
The cost of tuition should not pose as a barrier to students reaching their goals, which is why the Board approved a motion to increase bursary amounts from $750 to $1000 at its February 21, 2014 meeting.
This change will become effective in September 2015.

The UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is developing a flexible (non-traditional) option for the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree for B.Sc. trained pharmacists. Through the flexible option, a Pharm.D. could be completed by working pharmacists over several years, with much of the coursework delivered online. UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences would appreciate your feedback on how to create a Pharm.D. program that best suits the needs of BC pharmacists.

Registrar Bob Nakagawa, spoke on behalf of the College at a question and answer session with UBC pharmacy students.
The event was held in the brand new UBC Pharmaceutical building. We were ecstatic to see that the event was able to attract students who were at varying stages of their education, from first year to fourth year students. Nearly 200 students attended the event.
